Academic Symposium on "New Compilation of the Tripitaka" Held in Beijing
(From www.toutiao.com) On April 23, 2024, the "Versioning and Cataloging - Academic Symposium on the Tripitaka" hosted by the Institute of Ancient History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the National Centre of Chinese Traditional Culture was held in Beijing.
The symposium was chaired by Sun Xiao, a researcher at the Institute of Ancient History of CASS and Director of the National Centre of Chinese Traditional Culture. Bu Xianqun, Director of the Institute of Ancient History of CASS, and Zheng Xiaoyun, Director of the Institute of World Religions of CASS, delivered opening remarks. Over 30 experts and scholars from institutions including the Institute of Ancient History of CASS, the Institute of World Religions of CASS, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Central University of Finance and Economics, the Library of the Buddhist Academy of China, Beijing Fangshan Yunju Temple, the Beijing Enterprise Confederation & Beijing Entrepreneurs Association, the Asia Pacific Exchange & Cooperation Foundation, and the Beijing GaoZhanxiang Culture and Arts Foundation engaged in lively discussions centered on the cultural value of Buddhist literature and work related to the versioning and cataloging of the Tripitaka.

Experts and scholars attending the symposium highly affirmed the value and significance of the cataloging work of the Tripitaka. They fully recognized that Buddhist scriptures and documents, including the Tripitaka, are an important component of the excellent traditional Chinese culture. The versioning and cataloging work can promote the Sinicization of Buddhism and cultural inheritance and development, and is conducive to the exchange and mutual learning of different civilizations. The symposium reviewed the origins, history, and characteristics of the versions and cataloging of the Tripitaka, and put forward relevant suggestions and opinions on the challenges in the cataloging and collation of the New Compilation of the Tripitaka, as well as new materials and methodologies in recent years.

It pioneered a new collaborative model for the versioning and cataloging of Buddhist texts, effectively promoting the creative transformation and innovative development of fine traditional Chinese culture in the new era, while strengthening the rescue, protection, collation, research, and publication of ancient books.

During the meeting, a signing ceremony was held between the National Centre of Chinese Traditional Culture and the Beijing GaoZhanxiang Culture and Arts Foundation. The Beijing GaoZhanxiang Culture and Arts Foundation, in collaboration with Guangdong Chengyun Culture Communication Co., Ltd., has established the "Classic Culture Communication Fund" to create a public welfare platform supporting the compilation and printing activities for the New Compilation of the Tripitaka.
